A Day Trip to the Caminito del Rey: The King's Path of Andalusia

The Caminito del Rey, also known as the King's Path, is one of the most breathtaking hiking trails in Spain. Located in the heart of Andalusia, close to the city of Málaga, this unique walk offers a mix of adventure, natural beauty and historical significance. Whether you're an avid hiker or just looking for an unforgettable day trip, the Caminito del Rey is a must-see destination. Here's everything you need to know before your visit.

The King's Path

The Caminito del Rey is a spectacular narrow path that winds along the walls of a steep gorge, overlooking the Guadalhorce River. The trail is approximately 7.7 kilometers long and ranges in elevation from 100 to 700 meters above the river. The walk is relatively easy, with a well-maintained path and impressive suspension bridges that guarantee an unforgettable experience. The walk usually takes between three and four hours.

History of the Caminito del Rey

The King's Path was originally built between 1901 and 1905 to give workers access to the Chorro and Gaitanejo hydroelectric power stations. In 1921, the trail received its royal name when King Alfonso XIII opened the Conde del Guadalhorce dam and hiked part of the trail. After years of neglect and many accidents, the trail was closed to the public in 2000. After an extensive restoration completed in 2015, the Caminito del Rey reopened and quickly became a popular tourist attraction.

The Walking Route

The route starts at the north entrance in Ardales and ends at the south entrance in Álora. The trail is one-way, meaning you have to hike from north to south. It starts with a walk through a serene pine forest, before reaching the famous cliffs and suspension bridges. The highlight of the route is the impressive suspension bridge over the gorge, which offers breathtaking views of the valley below.

How to Achieve

The Caminito del Rey is easily accessible from Málaga, which is about 60 kilometers south of the trail. You can reach the walking route by car, train or bus:

  • Car: There is parking at the north entrance in Ardales. From here you can take a shuttle bus to the starting point of the walk.

  • Train: There are regular trains from Málaga to El Chorro. From the train station, you can take a short bus ride or taxi ride to the trail entrance.

  • Bus: Several companies offer organized day trips from Málaga, including transport and entrance tickets.

Cost

A ticket for the Caminito del Rey usually costs between 10 and 18 euros, depending on the season and whether you choose a guided tour. It is advisable to book your tickets online in advance, as access is limited and tickets can sell out quickly.
