The nature reserve Cabo de Gata is one of the pearls of Spain. A wild old vulcanic landscape with a rough coast varied by beautiful bays and beaches with little tourism.


Cabo de Gata lies in the utmost southeastern part of Spain and boasts the most sun hours and the least rainfall of Europe (an average of less than 200 mm per year, compare with the average of Great Britain of 1200 mm per year). The nature reserve covers an area of 38.000 hectares of land and 12.000 hectares of water. This is an ideal walking area: in autumn, winter and spring. The summer months are too hot to walk here.

In the wintermonths it is usually sunny and the temperature can be compared with a nice springday in England. The nights are fresh and then evenings might be spent around the open fire. Spring and autumn in southeast Spain have summer temperatures according to British standards.

We live in Cómpeta (a 3-hour drive from Cabo de Gata) and we come here regularly to enjoy another walking area and what area! Meanwhile we discovered and described more than 20 walking routes (from 2 – 7 hours) and we are happy to share them with you.There are walks along coastal paths and over the hills and mountains which surround this rough Mediterranean coast, sometimes along the GR 92 long distance walking route which passes Cabo de Gata. The differences in height are not big, the highest mountain in the nature reserve is El Fraile (493 m).

An interesting walk for birdlovers is the circular walk (3 hours without differences in height) around the Salinas de Cabo de Gata, a saltwater lagoon separated from the beach by a 400 metres broad sandbank. Here more than 80 different species of birds can be counted (especially in the time of bird-migration).

This offer is valid all year round with the exception of the week before Easter (Semana Santa) and the months July and August. Not included in this price is your flight to Spain and transportation to and from Cortijo Elga. You may book a flight to Almería airport (a 45 minutes drive to Rodalquilar), to Alicante airport (a 2,5 hours drive to Rodalquilar) or to Málaga airport (a 3,5 hours drive to Rodalquilar). You have to book your flight to Spain yourself. Especially to Alicante and Málaga many cheap flights exist.

A (rental) car is indispensable for this walking holiday. You can rent a good economy car from Alicante airport or Málaga airport for less than € 120,- per week. Look for a quotation with lowest price guarantee at www.spanjeanders.123carrent.com. On this site you can rent e.g. a car in Malaga and bring it back in Alicante so you might spend the first half of your holiday in Cómpeta and the second half in Cabo de Gata.
