Trek Cómpeta – Acebuchal – Nerja

This trek in the Almijara mountains begins in Cómpeta, brings you through the nature reserve to the remote village El Acebuchal and ends in the coastal resort Nerja. In all 3 places you will overnight 2 nights during which you combine variety and rest. Both Cómpeta and Nerja have good connections by public transportation with Malaga airport. Your holiday can be easily prolonged with a day for a visit to the Alhambra in Granada, also by public transportation.
The trek may start and end troughout the year on any day of the week. However, the summer months (July/August) are less suitable for a walking holiday due to the high temperatures in southern Spain.
This trek is convenient for walkers of all levels; it has an easy variant with day walks of ± 4 hours and a more interesting one “off the beaten track” with day walks of 6 - ± 8 hours. You can decide after the first walk whether you wish to tackle an easy or more difficult walk the next day.
In Cómpeta you will stay in a double ensuite room in pension Hadriano. At your disposal are a kitchen, a sitting room and 2 roof terraces, which you share with other guests. At a surcharge of € 10,- p.p. you can get a private apartment in Cómpeta
Acebuchal is a village in the nature reserve which was deserted in 1949 and has fallen into decay. In recent years it has been totally rebuilt for rural tourism. By day you might see an odd tourist but in the evening you can 'hear' the silence. The village does not have shops but there is a bar with good food. In Acebuchal you will stay in a 'casa rural' with all facilities: living room, equipped kitchen, bedroom, bathroom.
Nerja is a pleasant and not too busy seaside resort with lots of nice bays and beaches. In Nerja you will stay in a hospitable hostal of Dutch owners in a quiet street in the centre, ± 100 metres from the bus station and a few hundred metres from the beaches. You will have a double ensuite room, and at your disposal are a kitchen, a living room, a garden and a swimming pool, which you share with other guests.

Itinery:

Day 1 arrival Cómpeta and if time permits: warming up walk, overnight Cómpeta
Day 2 lovely walk around Cómpeta (take the walk of your choice 2, 4 or 6 hours), overnight Cómpeta
Day 3 Cómpeta – Acebuchal (take the walk of your choice along a seldom used footpath via Rio Torrox and Collado de Paez Blanca 6 hours or directly 4 hours), overnight Acebuchal
Day 4 lovely walk around Acebuchal (take the walk of your choice 3 or 5 hours or day off), overnight Acebuchal
Day 5 Acebuchal – Nerja (take the walk of your choice along seldom used footpaths through the nature reserve via Collado Blanquilla, the source of Rio Higueron, Puerto de los Umbrales and Rio Chillar ± 8 hours or directly via the village Frigiliana to Nerja 4 hours), overnight Nerja
Day 6 take the walk of your choice Nerja – Maro with visit to the caves of Nerja (4 hours), or a longer walk in the nature reserve or beach day, overnight Nerja
Day 7 departure Nerja.

Bus times:

Transportation by bus in Spain is very punctual and cheap.
A bus goes every 30 minutes from Malaga airport to the bus station Malaga (bus nr. 19).
From the bus station Malaga to Cómpeta there are 3 busses a day, at 11.30, 13,15 and 18.30 hours, in the weekend 2 busses a day (travel time ± 1,5 hours). If you arrive in Malaga at a time with no good bus connection, we can offer you a free nice walk through the historic centre of Malaga or if you want to overnight in Malaga a double ensuite room in a good hotel in a quiet street in the city centre for only € 32,- p.p., 2 minutes walking from the bus stop from the airport and 2 minutes walking from the bus stop to Cómpeta (you don't need taxis).
From Nerja to Granada there are 6 busses a day v.v. (travel time ± 2 hours).
From Nerja to Malaga there are 16 busses a day v.v. (travel time ± 1,5 hours).
From Granada to Malaga there are also 16 busses a day v.v. (travel time ± 1,5 hours).

– extensive walking descriptions and maps and if so necessary telephonic and personal assistance in case of problems; – transportation of your luggage from Cómpeta to Acebuchal and from there to Nerja without luggage transport € 190,- p.p.
