Mosaic Art Spain
The art of making mosaic is a gripping and very satisfying way to indulge yourself with art.
Wether you wish to make small or larger mosaic art forms, the design, playing with numerous different materials and colours, combining techniques: no 2 mosaics are the same and every style is very personal.
What makes it so fascinating is that mosaic art has been used for many centuries to embellish buildings (inside and outside), floors, parks etc., so countless examples exist which can seduce you to take part in this inspiring form of art.
Everybody can learn to make mosaics!
Our mosaic art workshops in Spain are given by Moira Schepel and Irene Bertoni, 2 artists living in Cómpeta, and are priced as follows:
- € 380, incl. 7 nights accommodation
- excl. accommodation: € 270.
Moira and Irene come from different artistic backgrounds, Moira a sculptress and Irene a painter with her speciality creating murals. Both attended the Mosaic Art School of the renowned artist/teacher Luciana Notturni in Ravenna. Both artists complement each other and they finetuned their skills using different techniques for diverse forms of mosaic art.
In the workshops the techniques taught, both traditional and contemporary, enable you to not only make small pieces for inside your house but also murals, floors, outside tables etc. using the very best suitable materials.
The mosaic art workshops take place in Moira’s art studio, a 10 minute walk from the centre of Cómpeta. During the week you will be taught how to use 3 different techniques in mosaic making. Special attention will be given in teaching you the methods used by the ancient Roman and Byzantine craftsmen.
The workshops start: 12 October and 9 November 2009, 8 February, 22 March, 12 April, 17 May, 14 June, 12 and 19 July, 13 September, 11 October and 8 November 2010.
Please be aware that the maximum number of participants per workshop is 8.
The mosaic workshops by Moira Schepel and Irene Bertoni cost € 380,- p.p. and include the following:
- 7 nights accommodation in double room en suite in pension Hadriano (based on double occupancy)
- 5 days of mosaic lessons, coffee and tea;
- tools and materials, clay, marble, tiles (Venetian smalti glass excluded, price on weight);
- paella or barbecue lunch on Friday after the workshop.

Programme workshop beginners:
The lessons are from Monday through Friday from 09.30 – 14.00 hrs.
| Day 1 | Historical explanation of mosaic art. Introduction of the traditional method (Ravenna double reverse). Use of hammer and hardie (traditional tools). This method especially used for large murals (cathedrals, mausoleums etc.) using smalti glass from Venice and marble. Pattern making and execution. |
| Day 2 | Continuation of the mosaic using the Ravenna double reverse method. |
| Day 3 | Introduction and instruction of the flat surface method. This method is especially used for floors, tiles, table tops etc. Pattern making and execution. Continuation of the Ravenna double reverse method. |
| Day 4. | Completion of the flat surface method and the Ravenna double reverse method. Introduction and instruction of the contemporary method, whereby the material is placed directly onto the surface used. You are free to choose material and style. |

N.B. Former participants of Moira’s workshops can work under her supervision in her art studio each Thursday 09.30 – 14.00 hrs. at a special rate of € 25,- per day.
