Spanjeanders is based in the white village of Cómpeta (height 640 m), situated in the Axarquia region of Andalucia, southern Spain, hidden in the hills at the end of a long valley and far away from mass tourism. Competa is surrounded by un-spoilt nature: the Tejeda and Almijara mountain chain and the large national park (more than 42.000 hectares) with the impressive mountain Maroma (2067 m) looming in the background. The airport of Málaga is just a 1-hour drive away. For arrivals at Málaga airport before 16.30 hours, Cómpeta can also be reached that day by public transportation.
The Axarquia region advertises itself with the slogan: ‘el mejor clima de Europa’ (the best climate of Europe) and, as we found out, that phrase is not exaggerated. Spring and autumn are ideal seasons for active holidays - with daily temperatures of 20-25º C, although the temperatures also are generally very pleasant in winter. In this region, the sun shines an average of 320 days each year and it is not uncommon for us locals to spend Christmas day with a picnic on the beach.
